Staffing Update - welcome Lucy Ellery

I'm pleased to announce that Burnham School has managed to establish a new cluster focussed on strengthening sports teaching and sport involvement between Burnham, Ladbrooks and Lincoln Primary Schools. This is a part-time position which is funded partly through the KiwiSport funding provided to schools each year as well as a contribution by each Board of Trustees.
Lucy Ellery - Sports Co-ordinator
Lucy brings with her a wealth of experience in sport organisation, teaching and coaching. Initially Lucy is familiarising herself with each school and has already worked with our senior students. Through support from Sport Canterbury Lucy will establish strong club links with Lincoln and the surrounding areas to help build pathways for pupils outside of school hours.

Starting next year our Year 7/8s will travel to Lincoln for Technology instruction on Fridays so they can compete and play sports each Friday afternoon against a wider pool of competitors from the three schools. Lucy will also be helping staff at each school design richer experiences for developing sports and physical education programmes. Welcome Lucy!

Talented Tamariki

Over the last couple of weeks we've been treated at our kura to a whole range of talented students all showing strength and self-belief to share their talents. This is one of the many examples of our amazing place of learning and the partnership that supports this. Children have shared jokes, dances, songs and musical instruments. Congratulations to the Student Leadership Council, in particular Jayden and Cameron for your leadership. Organising this event has involved our SLC figuring out how to make this happen and they have led it from the start.

The children have learned that two important aspects of leadership are how effectively one communicates and how well we organise special events such as these. Well done to our performers, these talented tamariki have shone not only through the skill of their performances, but also in the values and competencies developed as part of taking the risk!

New Music Tutors at Burnham School!

We have got two very talented people starting up a music tuition programme at our school this year! Nicky Lillicrap and Liz Nichol will be offering tuition for individuals and small groups of children. Some of this will be in school time and there will also be some after school slots.

Families will need to opt in and pay up front; in addition, staff will have final approval for those students who will undertake an instrument during class time.

Liz will be teaching guitar, vocals and starting up a choir in the school. Liz will also be relieving in the school. Nicky will teach piano up to grade 5 and percussion. Please welcome these two talented people to our team and community.

This system will be a user pays system and we hope to design it so that it is sustainable and long lasting for the benefit of our tamariki and school.

For more information on the programme, including a form for signing up to show your interest, please go to: www.burnham.school.nz/music where updated information will be placed as we develop this exciting programme.

Staffing Updates - Congratulations Linda Sweeny

I have some updates regarding staffing. I am delighted to announce that Linda Sweeny has been appointed as our Associate Principal. Linda is currently teaching in Room 6 and will take over the leadership of the senior teaching team from Sandra Keenan, who will move into the junior team as the Associate Principal in this area of the school.

This has been a very exciting process and I'm excited that we've been able to appoint two exceptional classroom teachers who are also fabulous leaders in their own right! Congratulations Linda you should be proud of this promotion. Given that Sandra is leaving the senior team this means we are seeking another classroom teacher, which I will update you on in due course.
